Japan has a temperate climate that varies greatly from region to region, from the cold
continental climate in the north (Hokkaido) to the subtropical climate in the south
(Okinawa). Winters can be harsh and snowy in the north, while mild in the south.
Summers are generally hot and humid throughout most of the country, with a rainy
season in June and typhoons between summer and early autumn. Spring and autumn
are pleasant seasons, marked respectively by cherry blossoms and the autumn colors of
maple trees.
